A Family Road Trip Adventure in Victoria, BC: Exploring Gardens, Wildlife, and Stunning Views
Embarking on a family road trip is always an exciting adventure, filled with laughter (and usually some hangry moments with highs and lows due to kid’s big emotions!), exploration, and unforgettable memories. Our recent journey to Victoria, BC, was no exception. From the moment we boarded the ferry at Port Angeles, WA, (and well before when we backed our car out of the garage) anticipation filled the air as we eagerly set sail towards Vancouver Island. Our itinerary was packed with fun stops, including the enchanting Butterfly Gardens, the breathtaking Butchart Gardens, and the awe-inspiring Malahat Skywalk. Join us as we recount the highlights of our unforgettable road trip, where nature’s wonders and family bonding took center stage.
Butterfly Gardens – A Tropical Paradise
Our first stop after arriving on Vancouver Island was the Butterfly Gardens, a tropical paradise filled with fluttering wings and vibrant flora. We walked through lush greenery as butterflies of all shapes and sizes dance around us. We marveled at the exotic birds, frogs, and turtles that called this enchanting sanctuary home. The interactive exhibits and educational displays were sure to provide a fun and educational experience for the kids, which made it a perfect family outing.
Butchart Gardens – A Floral Wonderland
Our next stop in Victoria was a visit to the world-renowned Butchart Gardens. We were immersed in a symphony of colors as we explored the meticulously manicured gardens, each offering a unique sensory experience. From the vibrant blooms of the Sunken Garden to the tranquil Japanese Garden, there was something to captivate every member of the family. We unfortunately missed the fireworks display during the summer months, but still had a great time. We ate dinner at the Blue Poppy and the girls mostly enjoyed the carousel ride best!
Exploring the Harbor and Downtown
The next morning, we took a leisurely stroll along Victoria’s picturesque harbor, where we found street performers, local vendors, and stunning views of the ocean. We walked by the iconic Parliament Buildings and learned a bit about the city’s rich history. We couldn’t forget to stop by Fisherman’s Wharf, a vibrant floating community with colorful houseboats and delicious seafood options. Red Fish Blue Fish was so tasty (especially after waiting an hour in line for it!) We also enjoyed exploring the downtown area, filled with boutique shops, charming cafes, and ice cream parlors, perfect for a midday treat. Murchie’s was a must stop for us for a little tea (hot chocolate for the girls and coffee for Chase!)
Malahat Skywalk – A Thrilling Adventure
Just a short drive away from Victoria, the Malahat Skywalk was a thrilling attraction that offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. We walked along the suspended walkway, high above the treetops, and felt the rush of adrenaline as we stepped onto the adventure net at the top of the tower. At the beginning of the walk by the parking lot was a gift shop and cafe, and at the base of the tower was a spot to grab snacks as well. This unique experience will left the whole family in awe of the beauty of Vancouver Island.
Victoria, BC, offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, family-friendly attractions, and captivating experiences. From the enchanting Buchart Gardens to the tropical Butterfly Gardens, exploring the harbor and downtown, and experiencing the thrill of the Malahat Skywalk, this family vacation created memories that will last a lifetime.
