I recently was given one of the best compliments ever.“You always look so put together!”

WOW- if only you all knew! But in all seriousness, it’s taken me years to feel like I have a minimal wardrobe that all works together yet feels interesting when I make outfits. Interesting, I mean, by added textures and different shapes of garments- I’m not your tee shirt and yoga pants kinda girl! Not saying there is anything wrong with that but I don’t feel comfortable in an outfit until it has multiple layers and textures. Even in the heat of Summer, I will most likely be wearing a topper layer of some sort! It may have been my past work experience in the fashion industry or just simply my love of diverse textiles, but I will tell you this- I know what I’m talking about when it comes to the “Rule of Threes”.

Photography has a known rule of thirds, and I don’t think it’s coincidental that style does too. Rule of Three, Third Piece Rule, whatever you want to call it, the gist is this: I prefer three parts to my outfit to feel like my look is complete. I don’t want this to be a rule that I enforce on others, so I’m keeping this post tailored to ME- just because I feel best dressing this way doesn’t mean you will! But, if you have been known to feel a little incomplete every now and then, stay with me and you may find out why.

Here’s a few examples of a basic outfit that I feel my best in and you will see why!

Rule of Thirds Outfit Combinations

1. pencil skirt + blouse + leather jacket

2. dress + belt + jean jacket

3. slip dress + tee shirt underneath + silk scarf

4. skinny pant + blouse + chunky scarf

5. dress + scarf + jacket

See the math there? The key is, each item is adding a little extra texture and different shape to the whole look. But here’s the thing- I’m also a huge appreciator or someone who pulls of a great oversized solid color dress with a simple shoe- so it comes down to this. Rules are meant to be broken– although I love my layers, so I’ll probably be sticking to my three pieces!
