Upping My Interior Design Game with an Online Class from CreativeLive

November 17, 2017

creativelive, online design class, interior design classAs you may have guessed, just by the blog title giving a nod to our home, I have always had a love for interior design and architecture. I know what I like and I can appreciate good style but I haven’t ever actually had the time (nor money!) to take any furthering education classes on the subject. So when I came across Creative Live, I was thrilled! The website is full of creative classes that can be watched on their app from anywhere at any time, and the teachers are highly experienced indivduals who bring a wealth of knowledge to the table.
The class I signed up for was Function-Driven Interior Design by Tobi Fairley. Tobi has years of experience with projects across the country for celebrities and high profile individuals, and her work has been featured in many popular design magazines (think, House Beautiful). Her work is simply stunning! So, you can imagine my excitement to sign up for her class. I was expecting just a one to two hour video, but the class schedule was brimming with short (usually around 30 minutes) segments of really helpful bursts of info. Topics include “Functional Space For Your Lifestyle”, “The Healthy House Approach”, “Age Related Design” and “Multipurpose Spaces”. The total amount of information is around 15 hours! I was highly impressed with not only the value, but also the content and my experience taking the class (and watching both online and in the app). This class was perfect for me because I was able to throw in earbuds during nap-time and relax while I gleaned some great perspectives. It also was so fun to learn about things I am passionate about and the technical and functional side behind interior design. The next classes I’m trying to choose between: DIY Centerpieces for Every Occasion, Introduction to Calligraphy, or maybe I will just stick with Online Interior Design Classes!

Quick Jots from the class:
Tobi’s take on interior design is “Functionality & Beauty” married together.
My funcion challenge in our house:
-corner fireplace/mantle
-dog and kid paraphernalia
-general everyday clutter and catchalls
Her goal is to come up with “Common Sense Solutions” to bring both function and style.
Function-Driven Design is made up with considering:
-traffic flow
-focal point
-proper lighting
-seating
-tables for drinks
Rethink how you are using things- do you really need a home office or would a craft space be better? Do you actually use your dining room or would a little reading nook be used more? Consider multipurpose items like a coffee table that can turn into a dining table, or an ottoman that folds out into a twin bed.
Think of areas in the home as “zones” for activities
Livable= lifestage + lifestyle + layout
Mental Inventory: I need a small end table in the living room next to our green chair
Apps to help the planning: morpholio, trace, magic plan

Topics for classes aren’t just interior design, but include art & design, craft & maker, music & audio, photo & video, and money & life. That’s quite a range! What will you be choosing to learn more about?!
